23/2/10: Paula Bloor, Geva Mentor, Amanda Jones, Loiusa Brownfield at the England V Australia match at the O2 Arena in London.

Liverpool 19/2/10 England won 41-40

Nottingham 21/2/10 England lost 53-48

London O2 23/2/10 England lost 45-43

On Tuesday 23rd February I travelled to the O2 in London's Docklands to watch the England Netball team play host to Australia, for the third in 3 test match games. Having won VIP tickets through England Netball, I thought it would be a great opportunity to report first hand, about my first international test series. England had won the first game in Liverpool, the previous Friday, by one goal, 41-40, and Australia had won the second game in Nottingham two days later, by five goals, 53-48, so in this final match both teams had everything to play for.

The O2 arena was packed from floor to rafters with screaming England fans, and a large contingent of Australian supporters were in evidence too. Sky Sports also were there to provide television coverage of all the games. Australia won the toss and had first centre pass and both teams were matching each other goal for goal in the first part of the first quarter, with England gaining the upper hand to lead 12-8. Keeping the teams unchanged they extended their lead by half time to 23-17. England replaced Sonia Mkoloma with Eboni Beckford-Chambers at GD for the third quarter and this quarter was very even, both teams scoring 12 goals. At one point England had a 9 goal lead, 29-20 but Australia pulled it back with some outstanding shooting under pressure by GS Kate Beveridge, to finish the third quarter with England ahead 35-29.

The last quarter saw England falter under the extreme defensive pressure from Australia's GD Mo'onia Gerrard. With the score at 36-33, an injury to our GD saw Sonia Mkoloma return to the court and try to contain the Australian fight back. A couple of forced errors from the England attack, coupled with a few controversial umpiring decisions against England gave Australia the upper hand and they drew level. With the fans screaming at the top of their lungs Australia pulled ahead and despite GK Geva Mentor and GD Sonia Mkoloma working tirelessly to intercept the passes into the circle, the England attack were just not able to covert them into goals and at the final whistle Australia had won 45-43. Dame Kelly Holmes presented both teams with their medals and trophy, to deafening applause. All the England players were courtside after the match for over an hour, signing autographs and posing for photos for all the young fans and are a credit to both England and sport in general. It was an amazing experience I will never forget.
